Sexual Assault in Nursing Home in Minnesota
A man was charged with sexual assault after allegedly admitting to the police that he sexually assaulted and threatened a woman at the Villa St. Vincent nursing home in Crookston, MN. According to a news report with WDAZ News the man was charged with first degree criminal sexual conduct, tampering with a witness and making terroristic threats.
Nursing homes have an absolute duty to keep residents free from sexual assault and other abuse and neglect when they have knowledge of the risk. It is not clear from this story if the facility did any wrong. In general background checks should be performed on care givers and anyone with a known criminal history should not work around the elderly as they are more vulnerable to all forms of abuse and neglect due and are frequently unable to take self-protective measures.
